Yesterday morning was the completion of our Interior Design Studio class which is followed by student presentations. A large part of the presentation is the critiquing process. During this exercise there is dialogue which often includes “caring criticism”. I found myself analyzing the exchange of feedback. I asked myself “was it valuable and was it received by the students”.

The wonderful experience of being a student is to reside in an environment where one can trust one another and one’s instructor to speak with candor. One of the things I love about working for Clary Sage College is the power they place on honest feedback. I believe not only am I educating but am being educated daily with insightful feedback from strong compassionate, leaders.

Following the critique, I asked each student how they felt about their presentation and the feedback they had received. Delighted by their response, they were open and gracious for the honesty. Not only are they learning the skills of an Interior Designer but are experiencing healthy criticism, allowing them to grow as professionals and individuals.

To improve, to become great, removing the “spinach in our teeth”, as Dr. Steve Greene puts it, is part of our professional responsibility. The Interior Design students are learning not only the art of Interior Design but of true collaboration within a community between clients and colleagues.

For Immediate Release

Tulsa, Okla., (Sept. 26, 2011) – Fashion Design (FD) students at Clary Sage College (CSC) participated in Miss Jackson’s MJ Project for Fashion’s Night Out Tulsa recently.

“My students worked so hard to create their designs and I couldn’t be prouder of the results. This was a great opportunity for them to get a taste of what it will be like after they graduate,” said Dyana Harrison, FD department head.

The MJ Project was a contest where you had to construct a garment using only Miss Jackson’s shopping bags, garment bags, and tissue paper. They were only given one week to complete the garment. The students were competing against 12 other fashion design students from Oklahoma State University and one local designer.

“Everyone was blown away with their designs, and it was a great networking opportunity to get their name out in the community. Many of the students said they were approached for business cards and to get interviews for local fashion bloggers,” said Mandy Zachary, CSC career services specialist.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company and the City of New York created Fashion’s Night Out in 2009 as a collaboration intended to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, boost the industry’s economy and put the fun back in shopping.

It is the goal CSC’s FD program to deliver a quality education in fashion design reflective of industry standards. It is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to enter the fashion industry. Utilization of a high-tech/high-touch approach to fashion design education combined with first-rate curriculum and excellent instruction is intended to provide our graduates with the necessary competencies to successfully meet the rigors and demands of the highly complex and competitive industry.

Tulsa, Okla., (July 27, 2011) – Students at Clary Sage College (CSC) recently sat for the State Board of Cosmetology examination with excellent results.

“Our instructors work very hard with every student so that they can be the best cosmetologist possible after graduation. These pass rates are evidence of that hard work,” said Dr. Raye Mahlberg, CSC campus director.

Students in the basic cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology and master instructor programs sat for the tests. Basic cosmetology had 46 students take the exam and received a 96 percent pass rate; esthetics had 27 students take the exam and received a 93 percent pass rate; nail technology had seven students take the exam and received a 100 percent pass rate; and the master instructor program had three students take the exam and received a 100 percent pass rate.

After completion of these programs and passing the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology exam, the student may enter the workforce as a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician, etc. While some cosmetologists choose to work in the traditional salon setting, others choose to work as hair and makeup artists on production sets, while other opt to work in spas, hotels, or healthcare facilities.

Tulsa, Okla., (June 30, 2011) – Students at Clary Sage College are creating online portfolios using StyleSeat.com during their introductory Career and Life Development course.

StyleSeat allows students to catalog and showcase their creative work to potential employers in the fields of cosmetology, esthetics, nail technician, fashion design, and interior design. They can also use the platform to build their network of potential clients. As consumers turn more and more to social networking sites and other online resources to make purchasing decisions, Clary Sage College students and graduates will be easy to find online with professional StyleSeat portfolios. To learn the features of the site, students participate in a StyleSeat workshop taught by the college’s Placement Specialist, Mandy Zachary.

“The StyleSeat workshop occurs during the students’ first class at the college and the student response has been very positive. Beginning their online portfolios early in their program helps them to see their future as a creative professional. They see the online booking features and the potential to attract clients as very exciting parts of their new career,” says Mandy Zachary, placement Specialist for Clary Sage College.

Tulsa, Okla., (July 11, 2011) – Master Esthetician, Rachel Courtney gave Community Care College (CCC) massage therapy (MT) students a facial demonstration revealing the dramatic, observable benefits of using only natural products during class July 11.

MT students saw firsthand the dramatic results of using 100% pure organic and fresh products on the skin. The one hour demonstration and interactive discussion opened the students to a new world of organic products and formulas.

Courtney cleansed, toned and moisturized a volunteer’s face using a pumpkin enzyme facial peel that was so fresh it had to be kept on ice until applied. The toner used had only five ingredients: witch hazel, rosewater, lavender, chamomile and glycerin. As she worked her organic magic, she talked about recipes you could make yourself, right out of the kitchen. At the end of Courtney’s 45-minute facial demonstration, the volunteer’s skin felt plumper, tingly in a good way, and also wonderfully hydrated.

MT student, Angel Madden, went home that evening and tried her own recipes, based on Courtney’s suggestions. Madden’s first experiment was with a powered milk paste to use with a shower. The second study she grated a “Zoomba” soap bar, added tea tree oil to powdered milk for a “luxurious bath.” She didn’t care much for the shower/paste, but absolutely loved the bath.

According to Rachel, “Mass produced skin care products contain preservatives to extend their shelf life and poison your skin—so many carcinogenic ingredients! In contrast, organic products rely on natural ingredients that have naturally occurring self-preservation qualities. Although their shelf life may not be as long, they offer many benefits for the skin and do not contain harmful preservatives. ”

“The director said she was extremely pleased and could not thank us enough for being a part of the day. Everyone had so much fun. It was a great event,” said Lisa Johnson, CSC master instructor.

The event was from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. CSC provided haircuts, mini facials, hand massages and mini manicures to 187 homeless veterans. It was estimated that 200 to 300 veterans were invited.

Stand Down is a national program and Hope for our Heroes is an annual event in the Tulsa area. CSC has been working with a contact from the Veterans Administration since December of 2010 to ensure that they were involved in the event.

Services and partners included food, clothing, health screenings, First Baptist Church, John 3:16, VA Mental Health and Social Work services, Veterans Treatment Court, Vet Center, VA Readjustment Counseling, VA benefits counselors, service officers, Mental Health Association of Tulsa, Workforce Oklahoma, Legal Aid Services, Social Security, DHS, DAV, US Cellular, Community Voice Mail, Muscogee Nation, Child Support Enforcement, etc.

In July 2002, the founders of Stand Down – Robert Van Keuren, Dr. Jon Nachison and Vietnam Veterans of San Diego – asked the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) to become the “keeper of the flame” and provide national leadership for the movement. Since the first Stand Down in San Diego in 1988, the program has become recognized as the most valuable outreach tool to help homeless veterans in the nation today.

Tulsa, Okla., (May, 2011) – Last week, Clary Sage College (CSC) Master Instructor Lorane Ridley, provided Lizette Rays, a terminally ill cancer patient, with a haircut and beauty products during her stay at the hospital.

“It was totally my privilege and pleasure to help this lady. I have several members of my family who have battled cancer. Some have won some have lost. She is a very sweet lady. I enjoyed doing it,” said Ridley, master instructor.

Rays called Career Services Specialist Mandy Zachary last week to see if there was anyone interested in cutting her hair. She is in her third round of chemotherapy and radiation to treat Lymphoma cancer and has been losing her hair rapidly as a result. She had been in the hospital for two weeks and will likely be there for several more.

Ridley immediately jumped at the opportunity to volunteer. She was able to provide Rays with a short-styled haircut, gave her instructions on how to wear scarfs and turbans, and even gave her bangs to wear underneath.

The college donated a bag with a CSC t-shirt that said “Dream Big”, nail polish, lotion, a scarf and a turban. Rays was very touched and appreciative and said that it made her “feel new inside and outside”.

CSC gives back to the Tulsa Metro community to approximately 30 charities through volunteerism and monetary and in-kind donation. Giving back is a part of the culture as one of the core values of the institution is to “practice corporate social responsibility”.

Tulsa, Okla., (April 28, 2011) – Clary Sage College is excited to announce a revolutionary new program to the Cosmetology field, Makeup Artistry. The program is currently enrolling for the July 5th, 2011 start date.

The field of Makeup Artistry is on the rise. There is a growing need of makeup artists to fill positions in areas such movie and television makeup, as well as niche areas such as bridal makeup, body art, and even mortuary makeup. Clary Sage College is excited to meet this need with a new, cutting edge program that will teach students all the fundamentals of makeup, advanced techniques, and even hair styling to finish their client’s look.

The new Makeup Artistry program will allow students to complete all necessary work to sit before the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and take a Cosmetician Licensure Exam. This license enables students to perform makeup techniques and hairstyling techniques. Students of this program will learn from expert Makeup Artists and work in conjunction with local photographers and theatrical companies. Students will also work with Makeup Forever products and receive an extensive Makeup Forever kit.

Christen Brummett, Esthetic Department Head for Clary Sage College said “We have many students that wish to pursue makeup only, not haircuts, facials or other services that are focused on in the other programs we offer. Having the Makeup Artistry/Cosmetician program will keep us on the forefront of Cosmetology Education.”
